The course is aimed at watching and discussing documentary films that approach topics of gender inequality, discuss what it means to be a woman in society and family or bring a distinct female perspective to the screen. The selection is diverse in both style and geographical origin, thereby offering an insight into distinct perspectives gender relations. |

Course content: Kim Longinotto’s observational filmmaking – a discreet but profound engagement with women’s roles and strong women characters Telling personal stories through the use of archive materials: home movies, found footage and public archives Socially engaged filmmaking and women role models Agnes Varda - self-reflexiveness and modesty as a radical style |

Knowledge Student: • ought to be able to know what different stylistic choices documentary offers and be able to recognise instances of their uses in documentary film • Become familiar with the social and cultural context around the films discussed, such as the feminist movement in the 70’s Italy, gender relationships enacted under Iranian marital law, the evolution of women’s rights in the USA and more Skills Student: • be able to do basic film analysis and critique, drawing comparisons to the other films discussed during the class Social competences Student: • is competent to express opinions on sensitive topics in a way that fosters discussion and without fear of judgement |
