Course description

This course:

- examines similarities and differences between girls and boys in learning based on neuroscience and studies conducted in classrooms throughout the world.

-offers a unique opportunity for the students to discuss gender differences on the biological, social and eventually cognitive and educational level.

- embraces key theories regarding language learning and second language acquisition, individual differences in the classroom and affective factors that may determine either successful or unsuccessful language learning.

The students will discuss all the aforementioned theories and concepts from the perspective of gender.

Course objectives

The main aim of the course is to sensitize students to gender similarities and differences in the educational context. More importantly, however, it aims to broaden students’ knowledge regarding individual difference and psychological factors that may promote more effective learning and hence, result in high academic achievement.

Course content

1. Conceptualization of gender (biological differences, social differences, social expectations)

2. Females and males as foreign language learners

3. Attribution orientation (how success and failures are perceived by males and females)

4. Learning styles and strategies

5. Motivation types (are boys more instrumentally motivated for learning to speak a foreign language than girls?)

6. Underestimating and overestimating language skills

7. Extraversion vs introversion

8. Emotions in learning (anxiety, enjoyment, pride, shyness, assertiveness, boredom, etc.)

9. Does female's heightened emotionality facilitate or debilitate language learning?

Skills

Student can:

3. use their philological knowledge - formulate and solve complex and unusual problems concerning the use of language as well as linguistic, literature and cultural knowledge, and perform tasks in not fully predictable conditions thanks to:

- proper selection of sources and information drawn from them, evaluation, critical analysis and synthesis of that information (k-U-1/P6S_UW)

4. communicate with the use of specialized terminology (psychology) for the English language description (k-U-4/P6S_UK)

5. take part in a debate - present and evaluate different opinions and positions in terms of philology and discuss them (k-U-5/P6S_UK)

Social competences

6. critically assess their philological knowledge and recognize the importance of knowledge of the language in solving cognitive practical problems (k-K-1/ P6S_KK)
