Course description

English – Spanish Talks is dedicated to those students who want to develop their oral skills in Spanish. The main methodological idea for this course is to learn and practice Spanish by means of using English as the language of instruction and, even more importantly, as the sourse for identical or very similar Spanish words (cognates), proncunciation (seseo, ceceo, th), and some grammar constructions (similar elements in both languages). Students of English Philology will widen their Spanish vocabulary, practicing pronunciation of the th-sound (which means reducing the so-called seseo), and their understanding of some grammar constructions by contrastive analysis and practice of both languages at the same time, with special attention to Spanish. At some point, we will discuss Spanish-English cultural issues too, Spanglish for example.

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes

1. Active participation in classes - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)

2. Video presentation/online presentation/in class presentation on a specific topic - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)

3. Other, advanced forms possible (e.g. recording a video clip based on academic material) in the case of willingness to achieve a higher grade - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)
