Skrócony opis:

The aim of the social sciences module is to equip the students with the knowledge about basics of the paradigms and methods within different social sciences in the relation to cultural studies and humanities in general. The students will be exposed to an overview of different methodologies and research techniques. This includes the basic concepts and terminology. The student will be able to design a basic research project, conduct analysis and present results.

The aim of the linguistic module is to equip the students with the knowledge about basics of the paradigms and methods used in linguistic studies. The students will be exposed to an overview of different methodologies and research techniques. This includes the basic concepts and terminology. The student will be able to design a basic research project, conduct analysis and present results.

The literary module shows students how research is conducted in the discipline of litarary studies with application of selected theories.

Pełny opis:

1. Theory for the working social scientists: paradigms, traditions, approaches.

2. Overview of the techniques of data collection: interviewing, surveys, observation, secondary data analysis.

3. Designing a research project: asking questions and finding the right means to address them.

4. Basics of quantitative data analysis.

5. Basics of qualitative data analysis.

6. Reporting the results.

Linguistic module:

1. The main research orientations within the subject field

2. Theoretical models and research paradigms: quantitative, qualitative, normative and critical

3. Methodologies and analytic categories: from hypothesis to design of the study

4. Research procedures: data sampling, analytical tools, methods of presentation and discussion.

5. The scope and results of research: conclusions.

6. The issues to be explored, limitations, criticism.

In the literary part students get familiar with the following theoretical approaches:

Author-oriented theories, Psychoanalytic criticism

Reader-oriented theories, Text-centred theories: Formalism, Structuralism, Semiotics, Deconstruction

Context-oriented theories: Marxist criticism, New historicism, Cultural materialism, Feminist criticism, Gender theory, Queer theory, Post-colonial criticism, Critical Race Theory, Ecocriticism.

Students:

1. have basic knowledge about the significance of the humanities, particularly the discipline of philology, in the system of scientific disciplines, about their research subjects as well as their methodological specificity (k-W-1)

2. have basic knowledge about the significance of the study of language and communication within the discipline of philology, about their research subjects as well as their methodological specificity(k-W-2, k-W-3)

3. have a systematic detailed knowledge of current research in linguistics, discourse analysis as well as other related disciplines and their research orientations (k-W-7)

Skills

Students can:

4. search for, analyze, select, evaluate and use information collected from various sources and presented in various media (k-U-1)

5. apply the terminology, theoretical frameworks, research paradigms and methodological approaches of linguistics studies (k-U-4)

Social competences

Students:

6. recognize priorities and objectives in self-study, (individual and group) assignments and research (k-K-1, k-K-2)

Literary module:

Students know and understand:

-theories, methodology and general and detailed terminology of literature studies (K-W-3)

- methods of analysis and interpretation of texts and culture products,within selected traditions, theories and research schools in literature studies (k-W-4)

Students can:

-use their philological knowledge - formulate and solve complex and unusual problems concerning the use of literature knowledge, and perform tasks in not fully predictable conditions thanks to:

- proper selection of sources and information drawn from them, evaluation, critical analysis and synthesis of that information

- selection and use of appropriate methods and tools, including advanced information and communication techniques (ICT)(k-U-1).

- formulate and analyse research problems, choose methods and tools for solving them, using knowledge of literature studies (with the possibility of taking into account the knowledge of related sciences) (k-U-2),

- recognize texts and other creations of culture and carry out their critical analysis and interpretation with the use of standard philological methods allowing for an assessment of their relevance and impact in the historical and cultural process. (k-U-3).

In-class activities will check if students can take part in a debate -present and evaluate different opinions and positions on literary theories and discuss them (k-U-5).

Students are ready to participate in cultural life and use its various forms with reference to literature studies (k-K-4)

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

The course (module) grade will be based on the students’ performance in class (participating in the discussion based on the readings) (20%) and the performance in the in-class test (30%) and the research project proposal turned in at the end of the module/course (50%).

The course (module) grade will be based on the students’ performance in class (participating in the discussion based on the readings) and the performance in the in-class test

Literary module:

Active participation in class discussions - 20% of the final grade

Written test - 80% of the final grade
