Skrócony opis:

The aim of the course, which is a continuation of the “Writing for specific purposes 1” course, is to help students further develop fluency in discussing various topics in a written form in the business context. Moreover it intends to familiarize students with business vocabulary and grammatical constructions characteristic of business English, and to improve writing skills needed for writing documents and business texts in English with special attention paid to texts used in business, commerce, industry, banking and company management.

Pełny opis:

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with and give practical advice on how to design and create professional business documents and commercial correspondence. Students work on their style of writing, grammatical correctness and specific vocabulary. Additionally, the course explains, how to prepare, organize, write and correct their texts so that they achieve specific purposes. During the course students revise and extend their knowledge of the formal style of writing used in the business world.. Moreover, they analyse samples of texts, make use of text templates and learn the rules of conducting proficient desk research, proper documentation styles and using copyrighted material in a business context. Apart from that, students work with the use of data bases in order to prepare summaries, reports, paraphrases, letters, business plans etc. for specific business purposes.

Graduate can:

3. use their knowledge of business vocabulary and structures to prepare texts with specific purposes thanks to competent and proficient desk research in the initial stage of the writing process, as well as selection and use of appropriate methods and tools, including online data bases, business document templates and samples of texts (k-U-1, P6S_UW)

4. communicate in a written form with the use of business terminology to produce texts in English for specific purposes, such as reports, summaries, letters, paraphrases, business plans (k-U-4 P6S_UK)

5. use English at least C1 level to produce texts and documents connected with business, commerce, industry, banking and company management (k-U-6, P6S_UK)

Active participation in classes -15% of the final grade

pluses for informed participation in classes and exercises: 1-2 pluses 3,0; 3-4 pluses 3,5; 5-6 pluses 4,0; 7-8 pluses 4,5; 9 pluses and more 5,0.

Five small written in-class tasks completed in a specified time (completing a report, letter and business plan; writing a summary and a paraphrase,) – 20% of the final grade

Five tasks completed – 5,0

One final written in-class assignment – 65 % of the final grade

In the final assignment 3 components are evaluated: use of business vocabulary and structures as well as correct grammatical forms 1-7 points; use of formal style of writing 1-7 points, compliance with the selected form of a business text 1-7 points

12-13 points – 3,0

14-15 points – 3,0

16-17 points – 4,0

18-19 points – 4,5

20-21 points – 5,0

All grades are discussed with students individually after every assignment and at the end of the semester.
