Skrócony opis: |
The aim of the linguistic module is to equip the students with the knowledge about basics of the paradigms and methods used in linguistic studies. The students will be exposed to an overview of different methodologies and research techniques. This includes the basic concepts and terminology. The student will be able to design a basic research project, conduct analysis and present results. The aim of the sociological module is to familiarize students with the basics of social research and possibilities to apply such an approach within linguistics. Students will be exposed to an overview of basic paradigms within social sciences (as positivism and interpretivism) and their consequences for the research practice. Students will learn how to create a questionnaire and perform an interview. Presented theories and methodologies will be supplemented with examples from various research. Culture module -see below. |

Linguistic module: 1. The main research orientations within the subject field 2. Theoretical models and research paradigms: quantitative, qualitative, normative and critical 3. Methodologies and analytic categories: from hypothesis to design of the study 4. Research procedures: data sampling, analytical tools, methods of presentation and discussion. 5. The scope and results of research: conclusions. 6. The issues to be explored, limitations, criticism. Culture module: The main goal of the module related to culture is to make students familiar with the chosen approaches and methods in research related to the following aspects of culture: education, media and visual arts. Students will analyse and practice the concrete methods of analysis related to hidden curriculum (education and media) and propaganda (visual materials - pictures and films). Topics covered: 1. Culture - notion of the term and ways of researching its aspects 2. Analysis of visual materials (pictures, films, adverts) - steps and types of analysis 3. Methods of propaganda and their application in the reasearch of culture 4. Hidden curriculum - the notion and its application in the research of culture |

Linguistic module: Students: 1. have basic knowledge about the significance of the humanities, particularly the discipline of philology, in the system of scientific disciplines, about their research subjects as well as their methodological specificity (k-W-1) 2. have basic knowledge about the significance of the study of language and communication within the discipline of philology, about their research subjects as well as their methodological specificity(k-W-2, k-W-3) 3. have a systematic detailed knowledge of current research in linguistics, discourse analysis as well as other related disciplines and their research orientations (k-W-7) Skills Students can: 4. search for, analyze, select, evaluate and use information collected from various sources and presented in various media (k-U-1) 5. apply the terminology, theoretical frameworks, research paradigms and methodological approaches of linguistics studies (k-U-4) Social competences Students: 6. recognize priorities and objectives in self-study, (individual and group) assignments and research (k-K-1, k-K-2) 7. comply with the rules of professional ethics and require it from others (k-K-3) Research in culture: Knowledge Students: 1. know at basic level chosen theories and methodological approaches related to research of culture (k-W-3) 2. know at basic level methods of analysis of visual materials (pictures, films, adverts), texts and educa-tional environments (k-W-4) Skills: Students: 3. can define research problems and choose relevant methods to analyse chosen aspects of culture (vis-ual materials, texts, educational environments) (k-U-2) 4. can critically analyse and interpret products of culture, using the concept of a hidden curriculum, particularly in the field of media and education (k-U-3) Social competences Students: 5. are aware of the possibilities of their knowledge in recognizing, analysing and transforming reality (k-K-1) 6. can responsibly function in academic and wider environment, also in the context of choices they make as consumers ( k-K-5) |

The course (module) grade will be based on the students’ performance in class (participating in the discussion based on the readings) and the performance in the in-class test Research in culture Class activity - 40% A case study analysis and its presentation - 60% Research in culture Class activity - (40%) (maximum score=3 pluses) 1,2,3,4 A case study analysis and its presentation (60%) (evaluation based on “Rubric for presentation”)1,2,3,4,5,6 Final mark is granted according to the following framework Grade 2, 0 (fail) 0-59% Grade 3,0 (average) 60-68% Grade 3,5 (plus average) 69-74% Grade 4,0 (good) 75-84% Grade 4,5 (plus good) 85-92% Grade 5,0 (very good) 96-100% |
