Dewsbury Phonetics 1 1.2.5-D1-F1 class 30 2 dr M.Szyszka Methods of instruction/forms of classroom activity Lessons in a didactic room : practical project, individual and group work, discussion, practical exercises, text analysis, repeating recorded sounds, reading the transcripted sounds, transcription ECTS points in relation to student’s duties Phonetics 1 1 p ECTS – 30 lesson hours 1 pkt. ECTS – 20 hours of self-study for reading transcription and transcribing, 15 hours of consultation Course objectives The aim of the subject is to improve the skills of speaking through discussion in groups and individual presentations prepared on the basis of earlier discussed materials; developing communication skills, discussion provoking, fluency and ability to lead the conversation; developing writing skills of discursive texts in English; extending grammar and lexical knowledge with particular emphasis on stylistics, developing skills for use of English at a C1 level especially sentence transformation, collocations, phrasal verbs, vocabulary and structures within understanding listening and reading texts, correct vowel, diphthongs and consonant pronunciation. Course content Phonetics 1 Practicing sound pronunciation, vowel length differentiation, production exercises and minimal pair differentiation reading a phonetic transcription, word transcribing, short vowels, long vowels, diphthongs, tripthongs, plosive consonants, nasal consonants, other consonants.
