Course description:

The course is a continuation of Phonetics 1 course. It gives the students further practice in English phonetics. It is compatible with practical classes raising students' proficiency level to C1.

Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to improve students' skills in using British English pronunciation strategies. Their second semester of studies focuses on analysing and practising the pronunciation of consonants, with special attention given to plosives, fricatives as well as affricates of English. Students are familiarised with a range of pronunciation learning strategies with the aim to apply segmental and suprasegmental features of English pronunciation in order to communicate fluently, intelligibly and with the lowest possible level of accentedness

The course contents:

• Introduction to the course, revision of segmental phonetics.

• plosives, fricatives, affricates, other English consonants

• Strategic approach to pronunciation

• Suprasegmental features of standard British English pronunciation:

- Pronunciation of words difficult to pronounce

- Stress in simple and complex words, stress in compounds;

- Connected speech: weak forms, linking, assimilation and elision;

- Speech unit boundaries

- Functions of intonation

• Pronunciation learning tasks: text reading practice, pre-prepared speech practice, spontaneous speech practice

individual and group work, text reading practice, pre-prepared speech practice, spontaneous speech practice, ICT tools/e-learning option if needed

Form of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Active participation in classes - 10% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3)

2. Samples of performance (evaluation criteria: level of fluency, accentedness and intelligibility) - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2)

3. Written tests on suprasegmental features of standard British English pronunciation (prerequisite: knowledge of the IPA for British English sound system) - 50% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3)

Criteria of evaluation:

60% = 3

80% = 4

100% = 5

pass at 60% of the final grade
