Course description:

The course provides students with introductory academic knowledge on key issues and phenomena dealt with by the widely understood science of language, i.e. linguistics

Course objectives:

The course introduces language and linguistics - presenting language in its complexity. Studens will get a deeper understanding of the structure of human language, the ways it is used, and its broader social and cultural context. It is devoted to the nuts and bolts of language study - speech sounds, sound patterns, sentence structure, meaning as well as functional aspects of language: discourse, pragmatics, and language contact.

Course content:

- Linguistics as a scientific discipline;

- Branches of present-day linguistic research (theoretical vs. applied, synchronic vs. diachronic, contextual vs. independent);

- Divisions of linguistics in the 20th and 21st centuries (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, the role of the speech act theory, psycholinguistics, language acquisition and learning [the role of contrastive linguistics and error analysis]; sociolinguistics and language variety [“standard” language vs. dialect, slang, jargon; pidginisation and creolisation of language; contact-linguistics; bi- and multilingualism]

Student is ready to:

Final evaluation written exam (ONLINE) - 100% of the final grade (outcomes 1-9)
