Course description

The course in Undergraduate proseminar is to acquaint students with specialist theoretical and methodological knowledge within the scope of a selected diploma seminar in order to prepare them for writing a BA thesis. Students learn the style, formal requirements and theoretical concepts connected with writing BA theses, as well as broaden their knowledge in the selected field.

Course objectives

- introducing main research methods within the chosen seminar

- introducing theoretical models and research paradigms

- introducing the stylistic and formal guidelines for BA project writing

- preparing for own research project

1. The main research orientations within the studied discipline

2. Theoretical models and research paradigms

3. Dominant methodologies and research procedures

4. The scope of research of the discipline

5. The issues to be explored and implications for scholarship

6. The main guidelines for framing diploma research projects

Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity:

presentation, discussion, reading, material analysis, ICT tools/MSTeams

Reading:

Materials provided by the seminar supervisor and connected with a specific seminar profile.

The student knows and understands:

1. the place and significance of philological science among humanities and social sciences, its nature and its methodological difference and the directions of its development (k_W01/P6S_WG)

2 theories, methodology and general and detailed terminology of linguistics, literature or culture studies (k_W02/P6S_WG)

3. methods of analysis and interpretation of texts within selected traditions, theories and research schools in linguistics, literature or culture studies (k_W04/P6S_WG)

Skills

The student can:

6. use the terminology and take theoretical standpoints resulting from English studies (k_U01/P6S_UW)

7. recognize different types of texts in order to perform their critical analysis and assess their relevance and impact in cultural processes (k_U02/P6S_UW)

8. formulate research problems and use appropriate tools and methods to analyse and discuss them with other specialists in the field of English philology under the guidance of the supervisor (k_U06/P6S_UK)

9. explore and critically analyse information from various sources in the field of English philology (k_U07/P6S_UO)

10. use the acquired knowledge and skills to deepen their academic interests in the intra- and interdisciplinary dimension (k_U09/P6S_UU)

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Active participation in classes and consultations - 45% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,10,11)

2. Evaluation of the style, form and content of BA theses - 55% of the final grade (outcome 4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
