Course description This course gives students the opportunity to practise their debating skills through research of appropriate topics, critical evaluation, presentation of topics, followed by group or class debate. Speaking skill is practiced at C1 level. Students are supported in their preparation to self-study C1 exam. |

Course objectives The objective of the course is for students to research and critically evaluate a given topic. In collaboration with their peers, students prepare presentations which inform the class of both sides of the argument. Presentations may be oral; however, utilization of multi-media presentations are encouraged. Creative solutions are employed as to the technology used in the presentations in a learning-by-doing environment. A class debate follows each presentation. -------------------- Course Content 1. Punishment - naming & shaming 2. Neighbours from hell 3. It should be banned! 4. The news - is this news? 5. Political incorrectness 6. Torture 7. Animal rights 8. Language - swearing 9. Addictions 10. The death penalty 11. Immigration and racism 12. Abortion 13. Harrassment 14. Taboo conversation topics 15. Mental health 16. Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes. 1. Active participation in class and preparation for same - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9) 2. Graded presentations which initiate debates - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) 3. Balanced argumentative essay 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,8,9) Final Grading Framework: 2.0 (Fail): 0-59% 3.0 (Average): 60-68% 3.5 (Average Plus): 69-74% 4.0 (Good): 75-84% 4.5 (Good Plus): 85-92% 5.0 (Very Good): 93-100% |
