Course description

The course in Fundamentals of economics 2 belongs to the Business English elective module and is a continuation of a similar course in the previous semester. It familiarises the students with the basics of economics to give them the understanding of the world in which they live. The course focuses on such issues as market elasticity, consumer behaviours, cost of production, product markets, competition, the role of the government, wages, the role of the trade unions, and the consequences of finance and trade globalization.

Course objectives

-familiarising with basic economic phenomena and laws, which are of a social nature, and which concentrate on the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.

-familiarising with selected phenomena in the micro-scale economy

- elasticity of demand and supply,

- consumer behaviours,

- production and costs,

- product markets and the theory of competition,

- the role of the government,

- factors in the market: labour, wages,

- the role of the trade unions,

- income and poverty distribution: how rich are the rich; how poor are the poor?

- finance and trade globalization.

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Two individual in-class problem-solving tasks - 25% of the final grade (outcome: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

2. Two group in-class problem-solving tasks - 25% of the final grade (outcome: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

3. A final test with pass at the minimum of 60% - 50% of the final grade (outcome:1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

Weighted arithmetic average of the above.
