Course description: This course is continuation of Current events: reading and listening skills 1 and has been designed to develop students’ receptive skills such as listening and reading corresponding to C1 English proficiency level according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for language. While interacting with particular content students will acquire the skills and strategies necessary to accomplish two primary purposes: getting the general sense of the message (written or said) and working out the details of a piece of reading or writing. |

Course objectives: The course is aimed at raising students’ language fluency and proficiency to C1 level (according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for languages) as regards understanding complex texts (written and spoken) related to concrete and abstract topics, expressing student's own opinion on different topics referring to the advantages and disadvantages of various ideas. ----------------------- Course content: Doing the activities based on reading material, students will learn to -Identify the general overview of the main story or message -Catch the specific details -Distinguish the hierarchy or ideas in the text -Infer meanings of unfamiliar words -Summarize/paraphrase information -Visualize information/outline the content -Identify the author’s purpose and tone -Enrich their vocabulary within a particular topic Listening activities will help students develop the skills and strategies of a successful listener. In particular, students will learn to -Identify the topic and the main idea -Take notes and use them to answer the questions about the passage -Distinguish relevant and irrelevant information -Make inferences and predictions about spoken discourse ----------------------- Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity: listening comprehension tasks, reading comprehension tasks, group work, online assignments, ICT tools/elearning option if needed |

Learning outcomes acc to PRK 2019 Knowledge The student knows and understands 1. selected types of registers in listened and written English texts at the B2+/C1 level, typical for public communication (k_W03/P6S_WG). 2. different methods to analyse and interpret reading and listening texts at B2+/C1 level (k_W04/P6S_WG). Skills The student can 3. understand information in various reading and listening texts at B2+ level, gradually exploring C1 level of public communication texts (k-U02/P6S_UW). 4. analyse different types of public communication texts (listened and written) at B2+ level with elements of C1 level, using techniques of matching, gap-filling, guessing from context, skimming, scanning, and paraphrasing (k_U07/P6S_UO). Social competences 5. The student can understand linguistic and cultural difference in written and listened public communication language at B2+/C1 level (k_K03/P6S_KO). |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes 1. Active in-class performance - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,) 2. Mid-term test - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4) 3. Final test - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4) To get a credit students need to pass all tests. Level B2+/C1 50-59% - 3,0 60-69% - 3,5 70-79% - 4,0 80-89% - 4,5 90-100%- 5,0 |
