Course description The course is designed to raise students’ language fluency and proficiency as regards analyzing, organizing and writing short essays in English, writing with coherence and cohesion, writing skills and competence in the area of preparing various kinds of academic papers. The course is a continuation of a writing course in the previous semester that expects the students to perform at B2+/C1 level. |

Course objectives: The aim of the course is to: develop writing skills through doing individual and group exercises, analyzing English texts and sample essays, as well as producing well-organized, stylistically and grammatically correct texts. The topics covered during classes relate to recent news and events that receive media coverage at a given time. ------------- Course content: 1. Introduction and revision. 2. Creative writing session 3. Word order in English sentences - exercises 4. Coherence and cohesion, using linking words and phrases. 5. Parallel structures in English writing. 6. Analyzing common mistakes in writing 7. Writing introductions with thesis statements 8. In-class writing (introductions) 9. Organizing paragraphs 10. In-class writing (paragraphs) 11. Writing conclusions 12. In-class writing (conclusions) 13. Working on the final draft (exercises) 14. In-class writing (writing final essays) 15. Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes 1. Active participation in classes - 10% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3) 2. Four short in-class writing assignments - 35% of the final grade (outcome 3,4,5) the criteria of assessment of short essays: + (more than 60%) or - (less than 60%). 4xpluses = 5,0; 3xpluses = 4,5; 2xpluses = 4,0; 1xplus = 3,5 2. Final in-class essay writing - 55% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5) the criteria of assessment of the final essay Grade 3.0 (average) – 55-63% Grade 3.5 (plus average) – 64-72% Grade 4.0 (good) – 73-81% Grade 4.5 (plus good) – 82-90% Grade 5.0 (very good) – 91-100% |
