Course description The course is designated to English in Media Module. It raises students’ awareness of differences and peculiarities in communication patterns in various cultural and national contexts. It introduces students to what is acceptable and what is offensive in a given culture and its public discourse. It gives them practice in co-operating with foreigners and reflecting about cultural diversity. |

Course objectives To develop students' understanding of culture in the context of communication. To develop students' knowledge about communication processes in diverse institutions. To induce reflexive thinking about oneself in diverse institutions. To trigger critical thinking about power relations and their institutionalization in communication processes in culturally diverse contexts. ---------------- Course content Culture and Communication in Institutions Intercultural and Cross-Cultural Communication in Institutions Intercultural Communication Competence A Communication Theory of Culture Self-Identity and Culture Ingroups and Outgroups Privilege and Culture ----------------- Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity: reading and in-class discussion, group or individual assignments, mini-case studies, interaction with FORTHEM peers via Diversity and Migration lab, that include tandem assignments, interviews with lab stakeholders and experts in the field of intercultural communication in Europe. |

Learning outcomes acc to PQR 2019 Knowledge Student: 1. has knowledge of intercultural communication in institutions (m-W-1/P6S_WK) Skills Students can: 2. search for, analyze, select and use information utilizing various sources and methods (m-U-1/P6S_UO) 3. communicate in English at C1 level with experts in public communication both directly and through various media channels (m-U-2/P6S_UK) 4. collaborate with other students to prepare projects, presentations or texts in English that can be publicized out of class (k_U08/P6S_UO; K_U12) Social competences Student: 5. can specify the priorities for the implementation of their goals and tasks designated by others in media contexts and recognize and respect cultural, social and ethnic differences in communication patterns (m-K-1/P6S_KR) 6. shapes their own views on the basis of the gained general and detailed knowledge in media contexts and is aware of their civic responsibilities and are tolerant towards the other actors in the public sphere (m-K-2/P6S_KK) |

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes 1. Active class participation - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6) 2. Individual written tasks / oral presentations - up to 80% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5) Pass at 60 % of the final grade |
