The task of the course is to develop student`s awareness of the specificity of using practical English in academic contexts. |

The aim of the course is to help students achieve fluency in discussing various topics concerning daily and university life and to enable them to express and exchange ideas concerning various issues; to familiarize students with certain terms, idiomatic expressions and grammatical constructions which aim at improving their ability to express themselves well; to improve speaking, writing, listening and reading skills by introducing the specific vocabulary and grammatical forms Course content Personalities and lifestyles – describing people, personal values, moral dilemmas, ambitions; How to interpret body language; Education and young people; Making decisions - strategies and dilemmas; Giving advice – problems and solutions; Work – can a workplace be our second home?; Interesting jobs – why not changing a job into an adventure; Formal writing - useful tips and vocabulary; Academic vocabulary; The changing world - How did it use to be in the past?; Utopia – If I were a creator of a perfect world, I would...; Are there no limits? Bionic bodies, technology, and the exploration of space; New place – new life: benefits and drawbacks connected with travelling, student exchanges and educational programmes; Crime and punishment – are we safe in a Big Brother’s world?; Politics and elections - If I win the elections, the world will benefit because....; Humour – are we really supposed to laugh at everything?; Elements of phonetics – sounds and their pronunciation; Giving presentations – tips and useful vocabulary; Linguistic traps - words that are often confused and prepositions which can change everything; Grammar can be fun too – a few grammatical constructions which can be problematic. |
