Course description The course embraces key theories regarding psychology of memory, its organization, types and functions. Three main brain structures involved in memory formation and consolidation will be presented (hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum). Furthemorer, the students will learn how the memories are constructed, why people forget, and what is the role of emotions and neurotransmitters in the process of learning and remembering. The learners will be asked to watch a few movies dealing with the concept of memory which will be discussed in the classroom. Finally, during the course the students will have the chance to practice mnemonic which will enable them to learn more effectively. |

Course objectives The main aim of the course is to broaden students’ knowledge regarding psychology of memory, organization of memory, its types and functions. The course objectives are to be accomplished by: 1. Introducing students into the field of psychology of memory (Process and Types of Memory), specialized terminology and key concept in the field. 2. Improving learners’ understanding of what the neuroscience and psychology of memory can (and can’t) tell us. 3. Helping develop strategies that can be used by students to improve learning and memory. ------------------- Course content 1. Introduction: What is memory? 2. How do we make memories? Stages of memory/stages of processing: Encoding, Storage, Retrieval 3. Organization of memory, forms of memory storage: Short-term memory, long-term memory, sensory memory 4. The role of three main brain structure involved in memory formation and consolidation (hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum) 5. Why do we forget? What is the role of forgetting? Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) phenomenon and feeling-of-knowing (FOK) 6. Understanding memory through movies (selected propositions)- Discussion a) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind b) Memento c) The Return of the Soldier d) The Vow 7. The role of emotions in the process of remembering and learning 8. How to learn to remember better - Mnemonics, mind maps, memorizing speeches, words, numbers, faces, etc. ------------------ Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity Classes online: practical project, slide shows, individual and group work, discussion, analysis and reflection on the texts/movies students are supposed to read/watch, ICT tools. |
