Skrócony opis:

Course description:

The course focuses on the oeuvre of a number of female rock artists: mainly vocalists, but also instrumentalists; soloists, but also regular members of all-sex groups. The whole series of meetings shows female rock music as a most important and diverse phenomenon, linked to this same kind of music created by men, but at the same time totally different in their attempt to liberate women from the oppressive norms of patriarchal culture.

Pełny opis:

Course objectives:

The aim of this course is to give students a chance to see the development of female rock music from the 1960s to the present day. Although men dominate the world of rock music in the aspect of quantity, women are at least as important when it comes to quality. This shortage in numbers demonstrates that rock music was born as a highly sexist and patriarchal branch of pop-culture, and is still perceived by many in this way. However, from the very beginnings of rock culture (i.e. the 1960s), we can observe the growing importance of female artists, first as exceptions to the general rule, then as the loosely connected constellation of self-aware vocalists and musicians who want to function within the rock zone on their own terms, not just as female equivalents of a stereotypical male rocker. In other words, the emergence of female rock artists is closely connected to the attempts to make their sexuality and identity visible, i.e. to break the dominating – and thus discriminating – norm.
