Culture, popular culture, ideology: introduction and basic terminology. 2. ‘Culture and Anarchy’: Matthew Arnold, Leavisism, ‘high’ culture and mass culture. 3. Culturalism. 4. Marxist analyses of cultural phenomena: The Frankfurt School vs. mass culture; Louis Althusser and varieties of ideology; Antonio Gramsci and the concept of hegemony. 5. Psychoanalysis and culture: Sigmund Freud. 6. Analytical psychology and the mythological method: Carl Gustav Jung. 7. Structuralism (introduction): linguistics and culture - Ferdinand de Saussure. 8. Demystifying myth: the semiology of Roland Barthes. 9. Structuralism and myth: Claude Lévi-Strauss. 10. Postcolonialism: Frantz Fanon’s national culture and Edward Said’s Orientalism. 11.
