Course description The module is designed to raise students’ language fluency and proficiency (B2 level according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for languages) as regards: - understanding of spoken and written texts, broadening the range of vocabulary, - spontaneous speaking, including sufficient fluency and precision, - flexible and situationally appropriate usage of language in speaking and writing, including grammatical correctness and stylistic appropriateness, - appropriate usage of mechanisms of text organization and structuring - recognition and imitation of native-like pronunciations, accents and prosodic features |

The aim of the module is to: improve students’ understanding of spoken and written texts; develop speaking and communication skills through discussion in groups and individual presentations; improve fluency and the ability to lead the conversation; develop features of characteristic native-like pronunciation; develop writing skills in English; extend grammatical and lexical knowledge with particular emphasis on stylistics; develop skills for the use of English at a B2 level, especially sentence transformation, collocations, phrasal verbs, vocabulary and structures. Course content Reading comprehension: different forms of texts on the basis of which students have to find particular information. Listening comprehension: understanding of informative monologues, conversations and short fragments presenting some a range of themes/issues. Reading and listening materials are related to such areas of human activity as literature, philosophy, religion, art etc. |

Efekty uczenia się: |
Knowledge Students: 1. have a proficiency in English at B2 level, know grammatical, lexical and stylistic rules of correct uses of English, as well as of various registers to be used appropriately to social contexts (k-W-1, P6S_WG), 2. know of the main methods of analysis and interpretation of uses of language that are typical of public communication, be aware of the complexity and evolution of linguistic systems and meaning-making practices (k-W-1, P6S_WG), 3. know the formal properties and application of various genres and conventional practices in public communication (k-W-1, k-W-7, P6S_WG, P6S_WK). Skills Students can: 4. collaborate with other students to prepare projects, presentations or texts in English that can be publicized out of class (k-U-6, P6S_UK), 5. use spoken and written English (relative to B1 level) correctly, fluently and effectively to discuss a variety of topics related to the condition of the individual in the modern society or to current issues (k-U-6, P6S_UK), 6. comprehend spoken and written texts in English (relative to B2 level) to identify the general point/attitude and to find specific information in authentic public communications (k-U-4, P6S_UK). Social competences Students: 7. fluently speak and competently write in English (at B2 level) (k-K-1, P6S_KK ), 8. cooperate with others in a team, assuming various roles (k-K-2, P6S_KO), 9. are well-organized and reliable as regards assignments (k-K-5, s-K-2). |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
Forms of evaluation of effects: class participation 20%, test 80%. Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity: Lessons in a didactic classroom: practical reading and listening exercises (gap filling, multiple choice, single choice, true/false, matching), individual and/or group work. Listening: strategies, vocabulary activities, discussion. Reading: analysis, scanning, skimming, discussion. ECTS points in relation to student’s duties: Individual in society: reading and listening skills 1 1 ECTS pt – 30 class participation hours 1 ECTS pt – 15 hours of consultation and/or self-study of texts (as preparation for in-class discussion);15 hours of extensive reading and listening (as take-home assignment). |
