Course description

The course ALS: Listening and structures 2 is a continuation of 1.S2.EP.4 and gives students further practice in developing their proficiency in grammar, use of English, academic vocabulary and listening-oriented activities at C2 level. It aims at preparing students for their C2-Level Practical English Exam.

1 ECTS pt – 30 class participation hours

3 ECTS pts – 40 hours of exercise preparation for in-class discussion; 40 hours of extensive listening and/or grammar exercises as take-home assignments;

2 ECTS pts – 40 hours for preparation to tests and time needed to take it; 10 hours of consultation

1 ECTS pt – 25 hours for required/recommended reading

Course objectives

The course is addressed to students who continue to develop their proficiency in English at the academic level. It improves their C2-level competence. Through practical analysis of exam-oriented tasks with reference to the structures and vocabulary of English, and the language skill of listening, the course guides students towards their Practical English Exam.

Course content

- developing students' command of vocabulary with special reference to the academic discourse, metaphorical use of words and idioms, recognising and using phrases and idioms, using phrasal verbs, and understanding confusable words,

- developing students' command of English grammar, in particular fronting, inversion and cleft sentences for emphasis, reported speech, verb complementation (reflective and reciprocal verbs, verb patterns: infinitives, gerunds, that-clauses; verbs followed by prepositional and adverbial phrases; dependent prepositions), rephrasing and transforming,

- developing students' listening skills to understand the meaning of a range of spoken material, including lectures, radio broadcasts, speeches and talks (listening for general gist, details, specific information),

- improving students' knowledge of English grammar and structures used on the C2 level,

- developing exam task-solving techniques and exam strategies;

individual work (practical grammar and listening exercises: gap filling, multiple choice, single choice, true/false, matching, error correction),

class discussion and evaluation of activity.

1. grammatical and lexical rules of C2-Level academic English, in particular, emphasis structures, reported speech, verb patterns, rephrasing and transforming (k_W02/P7S_WG)

2. rare expressions and idioms, phrasal verbs and confusable words (k_W06/P7S_WG)

Skills

Student can:

3. apply grammatical, lexical and stylistic rules of C2-Level academic English, in particular students can identify and use parts of speech in a sentence (k_U05/P7S_UK)

4. use emphasis structures, reported speech, apply reporting verb patterns, rephrase and transform sentences (k_U05/P7S_UK)

5. understand, use and match rare expressions, idioms, and phrasal verbs to a given context (k_U05/P7S_UK)

6. understand a range of spoken material and use English as a foreign language at the level of C2 (k_U05/P7S_UK)

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Informed participation in class and preparation to class – 1,2,3,4,5,6

2. Listening tests – 2,3,5,6

3. Tests in advanced grammar and vocabulary of English – 1,2,3,4,5,6

Criteria of evaluation

1. Active participation in class and preparation to class – 20% - continuous assessment

2. Two listening tests – 40%

3. Two tests in advanced grammar and vocabulary of English – 40%

Informed, participation in classes (pluses for informed participation in discussions and exercises: 2 pluses 3,0; 3 pluses 3,5; 4 pluses 4,0; 5 pluses 4,5; 6 pluses and more 5,0)

To get a credit students need to pass all tests.

Test marks are granted according to the following framework:

grade 2,0 (fail): 0–54%

grade 3,0 (average): 55–62%

grade 3,5 (plus average): 63–70%

grade 4,0 (good): 71–80%

grade 4,5 (plus good): 81–90%

grade 5,0 (very good): 91–100%
