Course description: ALS: Reading, Writing and Speaking 3 is a continuation of ALS: R W S 2. It supports the students in their preparation for the self-study C2 exam. The students develop their knowledge, skills, and social competences within the area of academic discourse, with emphasis given to the use of specialized terminology related to English Studies. |

Course objectives: developing reading, writing and speaking skills at C2 level ------------ Course content: -Reading, analyzing, and discussing texts at the C2 level pertaining to contemporary cultural topics -Participating in small group and whole group discussions of homework texts, peer presentations, and contributing to both instructor-led and student-led discussions -Using the internet to select, analyze, and synthesize various ideas and viewpoints included in the texts pertaining to contemporary cultural topics. -Writing formal academic essay and participating in peer review activities -Giving academic presentation and inviting audience participation -Creating questions and conducting academic discussion with peer ------------- Methds of instruction/ forms of classroom activity: reading comprehension, text analysis, writing, groups discussion, ICT tools/MSTeams if needed |

Reading materials Academic papers and texts, selected by instructor and researched by students in collaborative assignments. The texts relate to students' field of academic research followed in their MA seminar |

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Students know: 1. selected contemporary C2 level texts and the main themes related to contemporary topics withing English Studies (k_W02/P7S_WG) 2. in an advanced degree, terminology used in contemporary texts related to English Studies (k_W06/ P7S_WG) Skills Students can: 3. select, analyze, and synthesize various ideas and viewpoints included in C2 level texts related to English Studies (k_U02/ P7S_UW) 4. read and create advanced English language texts related to contemporary English Studies topics, using formal sources (k_U04/ P7S_UK; m-U-1/P7S_UW) 5. conduct and coordinate a discussion based on homework texts related to a contemporary English Studies topic (k_U05/ P7S_UK; m-U-2/P7S_UK) 6. use, in speaking and writing, a formal language required to discussion contemporary cultural topics, by applying grammatical, lexical and stylistic rules of C2-level academic English (k_U01/ P7S_UW) 7. can cooperate and work in groups (k_U07/ P7S_UO) Social competences Students: 8. can critically assess the contents of C2 level texts related to English Studies (k_K02/ P7S_KK) |

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes -Participation in class discussions, both small group and whole group, and in weekly small cohort meetings: 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,5,6,8) -Weekly readings of texts and written response demonstrating reading comprehension and critical thinking: 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,6,7) -Individual online presentation: 15% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,5,6,8) -In-class discussion led with peer: 15% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,5,6,8) -Take-home academic essay: 15% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,6,7) -Final test in reading comprehension and synthesis of class topics: 15% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,7) Final Grading Framework: 2.0 (Fail): 0-59% 3.0 (Average): 60-68% 3.5 (Average Plus): 69-74% 4.0 (Good): 75-84% 4.5 (Good Plus): 85-92% 5.0 (Very Good): 93-100% |
