Skrócony opis:

Course description:

The course introduces the basic unit of morphological analysis, that is, the morpheme and its allomorphs. It explains and illustrates phonologically, lexically and grammatically based allomorphy on a number of examples in English. The discussion of morphology as a discipline within linguistics revolves around its two branches, namely, inflectional and derivational morphology. With the focus on the major word classes in English, that is, the noun, the verb and the adjective, the former deals with their inflectional paradigms while the latter is concerned with the main word-formation processes in English.

Pełny opis:

Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with fundamental concepts and theories relevant to the study of morphology. The course also aims at teaching students how to analyze word-structure by means of tree diagrams. Moreover, some elements of historical grammar which show the development of morphology from a diachronic perspective are introduced.
