The course in ALS: Listening and stuctures 1 helps students develop their language proficiency needed for their work on their MA theses. The students will practice C2 level listening comprehension and language use in the exam-type exercises and will be expected to manage at least 50% of accuracy in C2 level. The course is part of preparation for the self-study exam at C2 level..

Course objectives

to develop C2 proficiency in English at at lest 50% of accuracy in listening, grammar, use of English and academic vocabulary.

Course content

-acquiring proficiency level vocabulary in the genres of general and academic English.

-understanding of idiomatic structures and patterns.

- listening for general understanding, specific details, meaning in order to complete exam-related exercises.

-re-visiting grammar structures and patterns in order to observe their use at C2 level.

-exam preparation strategies.

individual, pair work and group work; peer correction; Grammar and listening exercises: multiple choice, gap fill, word formation, multiple matching;

class problem-solving discussion; ICT tools/MSTeams

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes

1. Active engagement in class activities - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)

2. Tests on grammatical material covered during the course - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,5)

3. Listening tests - 40% of the final grade (outcome 3,4,5)

Test marks are granted according to the following framework:

grade 2,0 (fail): 0–49%

grade 3,0 (average): 50–60%

grade 3,5 (plus average): 61–70%

grade 4,0 (good): 71–80%

grade 4,5 (plus good): 81–90%

grade 5,0 (very good): 91–100%

C2 level reaching 50% of accuracy in written tests

pass at 60% of the final grade (all tests need to be passed)
