Short description:

The course will be an in-depth engagement with the lived experience of migration, as narrated by migrants themselves.

In filmic texts of different lengths and styles, we will encounter a broad array of experiences. With factors such as motives, time, place and age of migrants varying, migration is a diverse experience and migrants a diverse group.

The films also differ in their focus: from the conditions in the home country which create the need to migrate, to the experience of a journey often fraught with danger and the legal and economic situation upon arrival.

Nevertheless there are some characteristics of being a migrant that appear in all these accounts.

The course will also offer an opportunity to reflect on issues of representation of disadvantaged in both mainstream media and cinema.
