Short description:

Course description

The course provides students with the knowledge about English language, mainly its semantics, about different types of corpora and bilingual dictionaries. Students will develop their reading and speaking skills via the communicative approach, and deal with new language situations and observations. The course will give them an opportunity to apply their knowledge about corpus and bilingual dictionaries into their study experience. Hence, they will progress in scientific thinking.

Course objectives:

investigation and analysis of English vocabulary using corpora and bilingual dictionaries

expanding English vocabulary - words, phrases and multiword expressions found in a corpus or dictionaries

development of speaking and listening skills

translation practice

development of reading skills and scientific thinking

1. basic terminology and linguistic theories in the field of corpus linguistics and bilingual lexicography. (k_W02/P6S_WG)

2. various types of corpora and bilingual dictionaries, their applications in different linguistic studies, i.e. teaching, learning, culture studies, translations, literature (k_W04/P6S_WG)

Skills

The student can:

3. use various types of corpora and bilingual dictionaries to expand their knowledge and search for the necessary explanations and translations (k_U07/P6S_UO)

4. engage in individual and group activities developing both language skills and learning techniques (k_U08/P6S_U0)

The student can:

5. communicate in English, use phrases and fixed expressions the way native speakers use them, and translate texts using corpora or dictionaries (k_K02/P6S_KK)
