This course will introduce students to the scientific study of psychology. Students will learn about the principles of behavior and mental processes of humans (and other animals). Students will become familiar with the concepts associated with the major sub-disciplines of psychology. Students will also learn how scientific methodology is utilized in psychological research and will learn critical thinking skills. Throughout, emphasis is placed on original empirical research. The primary goal of the course is to help students develop well-reasoned questions and arguments regarding explanation and description of behavior, using empirical data as the primary authority. |

To acquaint the student with the basic issues related to general psychology that are to support pedagogical work. As part of the issues discussed, cognitive, emotional-motivational, personality and social issues will be considered, which will enable understanding of the mechanisms of the functioning of the human psyche in an individual and social context. Classes are also intended to sensitize students to relate acquired knowledge in the field of psychological mechanisms to real life situations. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: At completion of this course, the student will be able to: • Understand the historical perspective of the field and the evolution of psychology to the present. • Gain understanding into the scientific method, gathering data, and the various types of psychological research. • Become aware of the specializations in the field and degrees. • Acquire a knowledge of applied psychology in differente enviromental. • Gain understanding of learning and conditioning, • Gain an understanding of the components of memory, language, cognition, problem solving, and the differing types of memory. • Become aware of the nature of IQ, IQ testing. • Gain understanding into sensation and perception, and the components of the five senses. • Understand the nature of various altered states such as sleep, hypnosis, meditation, drugs, near death experiences, sensory deprivation, dreams, and the sleep disorders. • Gain awareness into abnormal psychology, classification of the mental disorders, and importance of the DSM/ICD. Learn the symptoms of main mental disorders. (anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, etc.) • Analyze the social and emotional influences upon human behavior. • Become aware of how motivation effects emotions, • Acquire a knowledge of personality and the major theories of personality, personality testing, and nature vs. nurture. |
