Course description: The course, along with the preceding course General English: Writing with elements of grammar 1, is an introduction to all types of composition writing required at C1 level: description, narrative, transactional letter, argumentation, article and review. Each class introduces the basic plan for a type of writing. Exercises improve students' writing skills focusing on register, style and grammar. |

Course objectives: The course aims at familiarizing students with the process of writing at the level of academic discourse. It introduces various text types, the structure of an essay and its parts, as well as language mechanics. One of the aims is preparing students to pass C1 self-study - writing part. ------------------- Course content: - narratives (stories, witness statements), - formal letters, - transactional letters, - "for-and-against" essays and opinion essays, - structure of introductory and closing paragraphs, - concluding opinion essays, - use of formal vs. informal style in writing, - word formation: nouns and adjectives, - word order: multiple adjectives, - use of synonyms: nouns, adjectives, verbs, - time expressions, - use of tenses and conditional structures, - linking words ---------------------- Methods of teaching and class activities: language focused tasks, short writing tasks, essay, pair work, group sharing tasks, ICT tools, MSTeams platform |

Forms of evaluation of the learning outcomes: 1. One in-class written assignment - 40% of the final grade (outcome: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7) 2. Two take-home written assignment - each 20% of the final grade (outcome: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7) 3. Active participation in classroom activities (maximum score: 3 pluses) - 20% of the final grade (outcome: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7) Final marks are granted according to the following framework: grade 2,0: 0-39% grade 3,0: 40-52% grade 3,5: 53-64% grade 4,0: 65-76% grade 4,5: 77-88% grade 5,0: 89-100% |
