0,5 ECTS - 15 hours direct contact with the instructor

1,5 ECTS – 45 hours preparation

Course description:

The course gives the students introductory practice in English phonetics. It is compatible with practical classes raising students' proficiency level to C1.

Course objectives:

The main aim of the course is to improve pronunciation of vowels, diphthongs and consonants.

Course content:

Practicing sound pronunciation, vowel length differentiation, production exercises and minimal pair differentiation, reading a phonetic transcription, word transcribing, short vowels, long vowels, diphthongs, tripthongs, plosive consonants, nasal consonants, other consonants.

Methods of instruction/forms of classroom activity:

individual and group work, practical language exercises, repeating recorded sounds, reading transcribed sounds, transcribing, working with computer programme „Say it right”, ICT tools/MSTeams

Form of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Active participation in classes - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)

2. Oral tests - pronuncing sounds in isolation and in a text, reading sounds from transcription - 40% of the final grade (outcome 2,4)

3. Transcription tests - transcribing individual sounds and words - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,3)

Criteria of evaluation:

60% = 3

80% = 4

100% = 5

pass at 60% of the final grade
