1 ECTS: 20hrs - preparing for classes (extensive reading and listening) and preparing comprehension activities + 10 hrs - consultations

Course description:

The course, which is a continuation of the course Language skills: reading and listening 1, gives students further practice in reading and listening comprehension at an advanced C1 level. The course also supports students in preparation for their self-study 1 exam.

Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to give students the opportunity to improve their understanding of spoken and written texts and to raise their language fluency in comprehension of various texts carrying hidden meaning to level C1 (according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for languages). It aims at preparing students for their C1-Level Practical English Exam.

Course content:

Reading comprehension: different forms of texts on the basis of which students have to find particular information (skimming, scanning, guessing from context, paraphrasing).

Listening comprehension: understanding of informative monologues, conversations and short fragments presenting some a range of themes/issues. Reading and listening materials are related to such areas of human activity as culture, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, art etc.

Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity:

analysis of different types of written and spoken texts, various forms of exercises, in-class discussions, project work. ICT tools/e-learning option if needed

Students can:

3. comprehend spoken and written texts in English (relative to C1 level) to identify the general point/attitude and to find specific information (k_U04/P6S_UK)

4. use spoken and written English (relative to C1 level) correctly, fluently and effectively in listening/reading and follow-up tasks (k_U05/P6S_UK)

5. select appropriate strategies to do different types of tasks (k_U02/P6S_UK)

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:

1. Active participation - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6)

2. Two written tests - 70% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6)
