2 ECTS - 60 hours: preparation for class (inluding home translations) with direct participation of the teacher

Course description

This is a course designated to English and Translation Studies elective module. The course focuses on introducing the student to a variety of specialist English texts, e.g. technical, financial, medical, legal, etc. During the course, students analyse and study challenging forms of written English, syntax structures and phrasal verbs.

Course objectives:

The objective of the course is to familiarize students with various types of English texts, improve their comprehension skills and enrich the newly acquired vocabulary.

Activities developing language skills in the area of written translation of specialist texts from English into Polish and Polish into English.

presentation, text analysis, text translation, discussion, individual work, pair work, ICT tools/e-learning

3. search for, analyze, select, and use information related to translation of specialist texts by consulting academic and popular sources and tools, including electronic ones, apply techniques for collecting data, and produce good-quality translations (m-U-1/P6S_UW)

4. analyze target language (TL) in translations of specialist texts in relation to their source language (SL) specialist texts and evaluate the former objectively and constructively (m-U-2/P6S_UW)

Social competences: Student

5. is ready to make responsible and ethical use of translation products and practices in and out of the classroom - regarding specialist texts (m-K-1/P6S_KR)

6. shapes their own views regarding the significance of reliable translation for the development of the society and its general and specialized information needs (m-K-2/P6S_KK)

Forms of eveluation of learning outcomes:

1. Active participation in classes - 10% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,6)

2. Vocabulary tests - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,4)

3. 10 practical translation exercises - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,5,6)

4. Individual and group comprehension tests - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,3,4)

Grading criteria:

60 -67% 3.0

68 - 75% 3.5

76 - 83% 4.0

84 - 91% 4.5

92 - 100% 5.0
